The term cha hai (茶海), which can be translated as “sea of tea”, is a vessel that serves to control the strength of the brew. Also called a "fairness pitcher", this vessel ensures that the tea leaves do not continue to steep in between each pour.
 
Once the tea is steeped, it is then decanted in the the cha hai to then be poured into the individual tasting cups.
